Two Tone Henna

Two Tone Henna

Experimenting with two tone designs. The flower in the center was done three days ago. The design around it was done last night. Then this morning, the flower was touched up. The result is pretty interesting.

I really love how red this henna comes out. Also I should note, the paste was only on my hand for 1.5 hours. I added some lemon juice to the dry paste and let it dry again, then a half hour later I removed the paste. The henna still took so well for just an hour and a half.

From The Henna Page
“For the bride, the mehndi (henna) day is a very important day. The house is decorated with flowers and filled with friends and family members and there is music and dancing. The bride’s feet and palms are decorated with beautiful, intricate henna designs. As the henna artwork signifies the strength of love in a marriage, the bride makes an effort to keep it on as long as possible. The function ends with friends and family sitting down to

Henna looks different on everyone. Body , temperature and location ont he body have a lot to do with how dark the stain will be. Drier skin on the hands and feet stains much darker than the softer skin on the upper arm or back. Henna stains are darkest during the first 5-7 days, then gradually fade. The following are some steps you can follow to ensure a nice stain and get the most from your Henna.

1. Leave Paste on for as Long as possible
It is recommended to leave the paste on at least 5-6 hours or more. Leave the paste on overnight for best results. The longer the paste stays on the skin, the darker the stain will be.

2. Heat and Moisture Help
The warmer the body temperature, the faster the henna will stain.

3. Wrap it up
You can wrap the are with an elastic bandage, paper medical tape or toilet paper. Wrapping isn’t required, but it helps conserve heat and moisture, which help to make the stain darker. It also protects sheets if paste is left on overnight.

4. Remove the paste
Don’t use water. You can use lemon juice or olive oil to remove the paste. You can also gently scrape the paste off or let it fall off naturally. Try not to get the area wet for at least 6-12 hours after paste removal although waiting a full 24 hours is best. The longer you prevent the area from getting wet with water, the better. The design will be bright orange at first then gradually darken to brown. Henna stains take 48 hours to develop.

5. Moisturize
Apply some kind of natural oil or butter after the paste is removed to protect henna design and prevent exfoliation. A lot of store bought moisturizers contain chemicals that can prematurely lighten the stain, so its best to use something natural.

6. Avoid Friction

Exfoliation of the skin is what causes henna to fade. Excess washing and friction from clothing will make the stain fade faster. The less you touch the area, the better. Wear gloves when washing dishes is the design is on your hand.

Please remember, henna body are is not an exact science. Everyone stains differently due to countless variables. If you follow the above guidelines, your henna stain should last 5-10 days depending on body location and aftercare.

Henna Octopus

Henna Octopus

I set up my henna booth at the Crossroads Music Festival here in Ypsilanti on Friday. Its a weekly music festival that is free to the public. Vendors can come and set up for $10 and do as they please. Its so wonderful to get to see what Ypsi really is all about – music, diversity, art & conversation. I got to meet so many nice people and Nathan, Judah and I plan to be there every Friday until the beginning of Fall.

Here is an octopus I did on my upper leg for fun and to get my hand muscles back into working order. It took about 45 minutes, 60 minutes including the 15 minute break I took. The design was inspired from an online photo.

Here is the photo of the stain it made after the paste was removed. There reason why its not as dark as my henna usually comes out is because of the place on my body where I did the design.

This photo is three days later after the henna was first applied. You can see it has gotten even darker. Henna designs get to their darkest stain 48 hours after the paste is removed.

Just a tip : to keep your henna design longer, apply a waxy balm to protect the area daily and before you get it wet. I prefer Mama Bee Belly Balm ( that I had left over from my baby being born )

Teacups and Wildflowers

Teacups and Wildflowers

I am totally blessed and happy with my life. Of course there are ups and downs, but there are too many wonderful things to let anything keep me sad.

Life lately has just shown me how truly grateful I need to be for the big things like my supportive husband, perfectly healthy happy baby boy, my humble house, my working legs & arms and the smaller things like the flowers I planted outside, chocolate milk, carpet and stickers.

There are few better ways to enjoy your life than to inspire others to a appreciate theirs, too.

Here are some recent pictures of the garden and life around here lately.

Wonderful Family

Wonderful Family

Today I woke up to find these three Katie Brown “cozy mugs”, as I call them. Nathan surprised me with them and this great ceramic square plate to house them. I wanted one for Mother’s Day, but when we got home, the mug we thought we got wasn’t in our bags 🙁 .

But today he got me two others, along with mine, so I can have two friends over for tea! Wanna join me? ? 🙂

Printable Cupcake Wrappers & Template

Printable Cupcake Wrappers & Template

I was thinking about cake decorating & cupcake decorating recently. I have a huge respect for cake decorators (professional or hobbyists). I want to decorate cakes for a hobby one day when I have more time. Until then, a quick and easy way to decorate cupcakes (essentially tiny cakes) is to use cupcake wrappers.

There are a few cupcake templates online. With these templates, you can use the template to cut out cupcake wrappers from decorative card stock or scrapbook paper or print them directly onto white card stock and use my designs.

The size is for the standard cupcake size.

Supplies :

*Cupcakes in their paper cups they were baked in
*Card stock and/or scrapbook paper
*scissors
*tape or hot glue

Step 1: Print the wrappers onto card stock

Step 2: Cut out the wrappers along the outside lines.

Step 3: Attach the two ends, slightly overlapped, with tape or hot glue.
( I prefer tape just because glue around food makes me nervous)

easy peasy!

ENJOY!

Paper Flower Bookmark

Paper Flower Bookmark

I’ve gotten a few questions on how I made the flower top for the Journal Jar. I put together this quick tutorial for the flower and made a bookmark out of it. I also created a pattern for the petals & flower so you can download and print it! You can expand on this, making it as large as you want or as small as you need.

Step 1: Gather Supplies

*card stock for the petals & leaves
*scissors

Step 2: Cut out all the pieces from the pattern

Step 3: Start assembling. Curl and bend the pieces to make them look more realistic (or not, and make a 2D flower). Glue the tail pieces to the stick.

Step 4: Make the 4 large petals look similar to this, then as you place the middle petals, off set them to make it add the the realism.

Cassette Photoshopping

Cassette Photoshopping

It only costs $0.28 to send a postcard! I didn’t know that. In celebration of finding out that information, I decided to design a few. These are PDFs that you can print out on cardstock (that fits the specification of the postcard definition, and an index card thickness is thick enough)

Tonight I did an artsy photoshop rendering of a cassette tape on a postcard-sized canvas.
You can use it for a postcard, even a fun birthday card . Just fill out the TO & FROM on the peachy-colored parts!

Specs for a postcard:
▪ Rectangular
▪ At least 3-1/2 inches high x 5 inches long x 0.007 inch thick
▪ No more than 4-1/4 inches high x 6 inches long x 0.016 inches thick

▪ What is high? What is long? Length is the side parallel to the address. Height is the side that is perpendicular to the length. betmaster fogadóiroda
