February 27th we are hosting “Celebration Henna Crowns” at the Wyandotte Public Library, Bacon Memorial District Library . “Celebration Henna Crowns” is an afternoon of beautiful henna designs for men, women, and children with alopecia or undergoing chemotherapy. The event is from 2:00-5:00 pm.
Henna Crowns offer a beautiful alternative to the traditional hats, scarves, and wigs that many use. Henna is a natural way to beautify the body and celebrate life. This is a free event for anyone who has lost his or her hair due to chemotherapy or alopecia.
“Kelly decorated my bald head when I lost all my hair to chemo treatment.” said Patricia Berry from Ypsilanti. “The design was beautiful and her presence was lovely at the celebration henna party we threw to mark the event. She’s an amazing artist, a consummate business professional and a good soul.”
Guests may choose from floral designs, tribal and geometric designs, or bring their own ideas. Each guest will get a unique, personal design. It is recommended that the head is free of lotions or oils prior to the henna being applied. There will also be brief presentation of the history and use of henna as well as how the natural paste is made from organic henna leaves and pure essential oils
The event is free, so call to reserve your spot (734) 536-1705Read More
Did you see the music video Hymn for the Weekend ? Beyonce henna was so beautiful we had to do an homage I see this becoming a popular design, so I figured we would start practicing . Want to know more? Read this quick history of Henna:Henna is an all natural dye for the skin. Henna is extracted from the Lawsonia inermis tree by drying and grinding leaves and stems. The greenish powder, when mixed with an lemon juice, makes a temporary red, brown, or orange design on a porous surface. Indian families use henna in ritual skin painting, called Mehndi, for birth and marriage celebrations. Arabic and Turkish cultures also use henna. Western cultures have adopted henna to make temporary tattoos and organic hair dye. The Lawsonia inermis grows in hot, arid regions like North Africa and India. For centuries, people ground the foliage of the plant into a powder to dye cloth and skin. The strong pigment, lawsone, actually temporarily stains the skin. The dye is a dark pigment, but does not alter the surface permanently.

Sangeet Henna Artist Michigan
Oh boy have I had such a fun summer! So many of you have had excellent henna parties all across the state of Michigan and I and Lisse have been able to attend as your henna artists. Lisse and I have both travelled to Traverse City and Cadillac Michigan for different events : a henna workshop at the Traverse City Library , two graduation parties and a few corporate events. I have been to Canton, Royal Oak, Troy and Rochester Hills for many Michigan high school grads this summer and Lisse has been to Saline, Ann Arbor, and Dexter for birthday parties and girls nights. My henna studio in Ypsilanti has been buzzing with private appointments all season. We thank you for such an amazing Summer and are looking forward to a great Autumn.
This past week I did two henna parties for the same family, who previously had me as their henna artist for their son’s wedding two years ago in Cincinnati. Now it was the daughter’s turn to be married, and I have to say how thrilled I was to be working for this great, warm, friendly and super fun family again. On Wednesday was the bride’s mehndi party for her closest friends, aunties and family members. I was overwhelmed at how much love and joy was in the room! I also got to meet a few new ladies, including Monika who’s musing blog is over at Quibbling : Observations of the World Around Me - if you like to take a deep observational look at the ordinary, check her work out.
On Friday was the Sangeet at the Eagle Crest Marriott in Ypsilanti. A Sangeet is a party the day before an Indian wedding, filled with fun presentations, dances, speeches, and games put on by the bride and groom’s family and friends. I always have a great time attending a Sangeet as a henna artist because you get to see the fun and silly side of the families. Not to mention the amazing color and decorations! The decorations were done by the ladies at JDV Events . Go look at their AMAZING gallery of weddings including their traditional weddings as well as their fusion weddings – so lovely. I snagged some pictures at the Sangeet this weekend. I was set up in this colorful jewel-toned lounge for henna.
I also got a few photos of the henna tattoos from two days before that were done at the Mehndi party. It’s rare when I see designs after they have walked away! Such is the life for henna artist Michigan .
Here are a few pictures of the mehndi I did for the guests the night of the Sangeet
And of course, no Indian wedding post would be complete without seeing the bride’s mehndi ! I was so lucky I got to spend so much time doing this lovely bride’s henna because she is such a loved person by her friends and family, and I can see why!
She wanted traditional henna, fitting for a bride.
I love my business and how many great people I get to meet through it!

Hello Everyone! Here in Michigan we have been blessed with more and more sunshine lately, allowing us all to enjoy being outside more! I do love this time of the year. My flower garden is starting to sprout and I’m looking forward to a long growing season.
In other news, lately especially, I have been getting 1-2 requests per week for permanent tattoo designing for ladies as well as copyright requests for drawn art I have done to be permanently done by professional tattoo artists. I have always had clients at the salon have henna done at the salon to test out a permanent tattoo, which is a great idea.
I love that my art can touch individuals in such a way that they want to have it forever. I want to share a few emails I have gotten lately about permanent tattoo designing :“I have absolutely fallen in love with one of your henna tattoo designs and I am actually interested in having it permanently tattoo-ed on my body” -B.K. “This design catches my eye because it is like a Mandala, but very nature/floral which is something that is absolutely me. It is a beautiful reminder of how complex we are as human creatures, so beautiful and elegant, like flowers – and yet so connected to earth, simple, organic, fragile, like flowers.” – Brittany “I would love for you to design something fun for me! I want to get it on the top of my foot. I definitely want it to be circular. A little bit about me that may help design– I am a yoga teacher so I work barefoot. I LOVE elephants!” -S.K
“Kelly! I LOVE THIS!! Thank you so much. I am making an appointment somewhere around Ann Arbor for the end of April/May. I will definitely keep you posted and give you credit in all social media posts. Again, thank you so much. I really appreciate this. Let me know if there is anything else I can do to promote you” – K
“First I’d like to tell you I absolutely adore your work. Every piece is just gorgeously done. I’m interested in tattooing one/two of your designs on my hip. I’d like permission to do that. I’d be looking to join two pieces together for the whole tattoo.” – Marisa
“I just wanted to share that I got one of your designs as a tattoo last April! I get sooooo many compliments! Love it!” – Whitney
“I saw it on Pinterest and fell in love. I looked at it for a month and I realized I’ld love to have it on my body forever. I now have seen it on my body these past couple day and I love it even more!” – Amanda
*Blush* Thank you ladies – those words touch me deeply. Thank you!
Here are some photos of the henna tattoo designs of mine that have been turned into permanent tattoo designs and drawings that have been made into permanent tattoo designs as well.
Cute shoe weather is here again! Fancy up those feet with some beautiful henna tattoos! They last for 10-14 days, sometimes longer on the feet.

Happy Spring everyone! Starting to see more skin lately, here in the great state of Michigan. The majority of the Arctic weather has about passed here and once again it is the beginning of sandal & tank top weather which means the salon is starting to be buzzing with clients once again.
Lately the majority of my clients have been lovely mothers-to-be getting baby belly henna, pregnancy henna, prenatal henna (whatever you call it, it is so adorable!) I have said it before and I’ll say it again, as a henna artist in Michigan, one of my favorite henna designs is prenatal henna – mandalas henna designs, tree henna tattoos, floral henna – all of it is so fun!
Check out my latest henna tattoos for pregnant women . For the first one here, this is the second time I have gotten to do a henna design for this mother. The first time she was carrying twins with this tree design some of you might remember
This time around, she wanted a tree, but since it wasn’t twins, she wanted a similar design.
We did a single tree design with 5 flowers around it, symbolizing each member of her growing family. So sweet.
At her appointment, she had a few friends gathering around her as her support group. They each got henna tattoos done as well. Here are a few:
Another fun appointment lately was for a set of two good friends who were about 3 weeks apart in their pregnancy so they decided to get henna tattoos together to celebrate their upcoming births.
One of the women chose to have a mandala henna tattoo with a floral theme.
Her friend chose also a symmetrical mandala design but with an OHM symbol in the center to represent peace for her birth.
And for my favorite picture, here is a very lovely picture of the two mommies together with their prenatal henna designs

A lovely bride from this weekend in Novi. She chose lovely henna designs for her engagement ceremony henna. She wanted traditional Indian style henna with paisleys for the top of the hands and mandalas with negative space for the palms.
I just couldn’t get over that hand embroidered pattern on her dress!

Sneak Peek of a new project!
This summer I am working with two lovely ladies : Jamie Smith of Hair Peace in Owosso, Michigan and Stacey Jenkinson of Stacey Jenkinson Photography . We are collaborating for a secret project (that won’t be secret for long) and I am excited to show you a sneak peek of the henna crown design I did . I really loved working with this sweet model – she was so fun and already had her head shaved like that *love* .
That’s one of my favorite things about being a henna artist – each client is has a unique form to work with.
The design starts to develop itself based off the person.

Hello ! What a FUN Summer it has been! I have been most busy with private appointments lately because Lisse has been our main event artist for the graduation parties and birthday parties this summer.
I usually only do one public event each year and it happens to be coming up ! Summer DIYpsi 2014 is at the Corner Brewery on Saturday August 23 from 11-11 and Sunday August 24 from 12-6 . DIYpsi (dip-see) is a handmade art fair that takes place in Ypsilanti’s Depot Town District . I’ll be there in the beer garden. Come be apart of this amazing weekend!

I always get the question :
How long does henna last?
My answer is that it really depends on the area you have it done. The stain takes a little longer to develop fully on softer areas of the body, like the back. Usually though, henna lasts 10-15 days with the hands and feet lasting the longest.
Five days ago I did this henna tattoo on the back design . Today I got a chance to capture a picture of it. The stain came out so dark ! The dark brown color should last about 1 week and then gradually fade. Check out my newest henna tattoo on the back . This is day 5 for her henna design.
I love to do big, trailing flower designs on the back.Read More
More and more nowadays people are coming into the salon to try out a tattoo design in henna before they have it done permanently – which I think is a great idea. I can tell you first hand, trying out a tattoo with henna first has helped guide many of my clients in their decision. I’ll even meet with the same client, multiple times to try the same tattoo design in different spots and sizes.
Today I did a henna horse tattoo design trial for a client.
She picked out the horse tattoo from Pinterest and I replicated it in henna.
She really liked it and plans on having it done permanently .

Today a great client, one of my regulars, came by the salon today. She always has fun & different design ideas to work with. Today she had the idea to do a phoenix henna tattoo design. She came in today to have this design done to test out making it permanent.
The phoenix represents rising up from the ashes to be reborn – I think many of us have related to a phoenix at one time in our lives.
We went bold with a big phoenix henna tattoo on her back and she loved it.Read More
Seeing that as of 2013, 45 MILLION Americans have at least one tattoo, I am often asked to do a henna tattoo design around or in collaboration with an existing, permanent tattoo – which is something I find fun and challenging because I don’t have full freedom with the skin. I have to study what the first artist did to see the style of the piece which is also a clue into what the client likes (obviously) . I have tremendous respect for tattoo artists. I feel so much pressure for bridal henna that I practice the designs over and over because this will be on their skin for their wedding . I can’t imagine the pressure I would feel if it was permanent .
Henna is so fun for people because you can really play with different looks.
Here is a piece I did recently around an existing unicorn shoulder tattoo – the client really loved it
This henna tattoo I did in the fall for a great client who had the most intriguing tattoos. I really loved the beautiful bee tattoo here on her forearm .
Spring is officially here on the calendar .. but here in Ypsilanti, Michigan I still see a hefty coverage of brown, dirty snow still.
(snow, I love ya baby.. but you just gotta go)
I am feeling Spring – with my seedlings going strong, I felt inspired by flowers and seeds & came up with fun floral henna tattoos on the back of my dear friend. I love how the only space I had to work with on her back was the perfectly sweet little teardrop . I really like having a CREATIVE space to work with . Plus, this sweet girl just got back from a 3 week exploration trip in New Zealand & Australia so she has a nice glow to her skin. (She has such a pretty face, too)
I have been itching to do some creative henna tattoos on the back & in other sexy places. I have a creative leg henna design in mind, I just need the right gams to pull it off… coming soon.
Without further adieu, here is the sexy henna tattoos on the back that will have my friend’s lab coworkers curious . . .

Tis the season for baby bellies ! I had a great opportunity to do a fun baby belly design and henna tattoos for a party at the same time here in Ann Arbor at the Bead Gallery . The mommy-to-be was having a boy so she wanted a sun for her son , but still some flowers so I did a “son-flower” (sunflower) design with floral elements around it.
We also did henna tattoos on both her hands to compliment her baby belly design :: see more baby belly designs here
A fun floral mehndi design from the finger to the wrist .
One henna tattoo design for the top of the hand and one for the palm – complimentary designs of paisley and florals
And the last impromptu design, which I found to be the most fun to be creative with ! I rarely will apply henna to the face, but she wanted it SO badly – and I think it looked super cute xoxo
