Britzy Thrifty co-owner Sarah Britz

“Britzy Thrifty began with a love of history & reverence for the uniqueness of vintage clothing/decor that resulted in a Michigan based shop.
From Sarah: I’m a girl anachronism & a history buff. I long for days gone by, but I don’t live in the past. I rejoice in the history that each vintage piece has, and I’d love to share it with you! We are proud to say that this business is based in a small city in the Metro Detroit area of southeast Michigan. Sometimes we will have area specific items in our shop. Check out these selections to become more familiar with the history of our area! “

And my favorite part of their business?

“A minimum of at least 10% of all the profits are donated to charity. One day soon we hope to sponsor members & organizations in our local community who need help raising funds for their various causes. If you know of a great cause in the Metro Detroit area that needs help fund raising, please share their info with us on our twitter page.

“Second hand shopping is a great way to recycle! The vintage items you see in our shop all have a history, and some are so rare that you could even say they’re one of a kind. Our shop also uses recycled materials to pack orders as another way to “go green.” Check out our instagram page for some behind the scenes photos of us salvaging supplies! “

And if that’s not enough awesome for one post, Sarah & Steve’s sister, Stephanie, designs and crafts BEAUTIFUL cakes for parties and all special occasions. You can reach Stephanie for any of your cake and party food needs at steph.britz@gmail.com

Henna Tattoo on the Back

Posted by on May 19, 2014 in clothing, Henna, henna back designs, Michigan henna tattoo, Private appointments, tattoo | 1 comment

I always get the question :

How long does henna last?

My answer is that it really depends on the area you have it done. The stain takes a little longer to develop fully on softer areas of the body, like the back. Usually though, henna lasts 10-15 days with the hands and feet lasting the longest.

Five days ago I did this henna tattoo on the back design . Today I got a chance to capture a picture of it. The stain came out so dark ! The dark brown color should last about 1 week and then gradually fade. Check out my newest henna tattoo on the back . This is day 5 for her henna design.

I love to do big, trailing flower designs on the back.

Bleach Pen Dress – Henna Design DIY

Bleach Pen Dress – Henna Design

Hello All!

I got this simple navy blue cotton dress for $0.80 from the thrift store! It was a great buy, but a little plain for my taste. I saw some tutorials for bleach pen decorating, so I went out and got a few Clorox Bleach Pens at the supermarket.

The bleach comes out as a paste and since I’m a henna artist, it easily translated into a medium I am already comfortable working with.. :-)

I did one side at a time. I put a piece of cardboard between the two layers of the dress as I carefully squeezed the bleach onto the dress. I just free-handed the design. no planning involved here.

I let the bleach sit on the fabric for 5 minutes then immediately washed it with cold water in the tub. Then I ran it in my washer on a quick spin so it came out slightly damp, but not dripping wet.. and repeated the process until it was all done!

I just feel like the design I did made it into a permanent piece of henna art!

and here are the pics of the bleach pen dress ! c&c welcome!!

henna , linen dress

henna printed linen dress

Taking a winter vacation this year to someplace tropical (or at least above 60 degrees) ? I would suggest picking up this linen dress with a whimsical henna print .

Peg Bessie This is a beautiful linen dress upcycled and revamped by me. Carefully hand painted with swirling patterns, hearts and circles. With splatter effect details to add to that hand crafted look. I loved complementing the style with my own detailing, a very inspiring piece! The contrast of the coral pink painting against the rich warm brown is strong but subtle and beautiful. The dress itself is 100% natural linen and an expensive designer piece of fine quality. originally made by Paul Berman. Pulls on over head, spaghetti straps, mermaid tail back (ie it hangs lower at the back, this is a dress with very fluid, feminine lines) frill detail towards bottom. Unlined so perfect for warmer days. This dress has a very bohemian feel but is very elegant and would not look out of place at a summer wedding or a special occassion at a restaurant.”

henna, letterpress card

henna letterpress card

Oooh ! There is a special place in my heart for such detailed letterpress – especially a letterpress card depicting some beautiful henna design.

Wild Ink Press From our Henna series: “Henna No. 1″. A hand drawn design, inspired by beautiful ancient and modern henna body art, is letterpressed in soft dark brown on white card stock. Blank inside. Letterpress printed in one color: henna brown. The card is printed on 100% recycled card stock (made in the USA by a hydro-powered paper mill), and comes with a recycled envelope (saffron). One card and one envelope. (see our other listing for sets of six) We also have two other henna designs available.”

organic henna , leggings, screen printed

organic henna leggings

Organic . Henna . Leggings . — Three lovely words that when put together, you get this CRAZY GORGEOUS accessory! ahh! NEED!

Sea of Wolves Design  This beautiful original henna style wing print has spirit. The placement on the hip makes for a very sexy legging as the design wraps around the front and the back. The unique and flattering print is created by a process of lifting the colour from the pitch black creating a very organic look to the design, easily worn at any time of year. The organic bamboo fabric is incredibly soft and with the option to fold down the high waist and shorten the length at the ankle, these easy leggings are a great fit for many body types and are ultra comfortable to wear. Once you slip into these leggings, you will never want to take them off.

Another LOVELY pair of Dear Golden shoes..

Posted by on Apr 8, 2013 in accessories, clothing, Weddings | 0 comments

Ladies *(and gentlemen if there are gentlemen that peruse this blog), I once again have found an AMAZING pair of shoes from my favorite vintage shop: Dear Golden here in Ypsilanti. Some of you may remember these shoes I bought for a wedding. I now am IN the wedding of a great friend and we were tasked with finding our own bridesmaid dress, shoes etc. and I was jazzed for the opportunity. The only perimeters was it needed to be a pastel sundress. Any pattern, brand or color choice was up to us as long as it fell into the pastel/sundress category. When my friend told us the requirements my brain was like: “You mean, I get to be apart of your big day and you’re giving me an excuse to buy a dress I’ll actually WEAR AGAIN??!?… OKAY!”

dear golden, ypsilanti, michigan vintage shop

Soooo. what did I do? Of course I directed myself to contact my go-to  lady team of “people who let me buy their lovely items” : THREADBEAT  and Dear Golden .    Rebecca Tanner-Russell , the wonder woman behind THREADBEAT  created a beautifully detailed sundress for me to wear in the wedding. (You’ll have to wait for pictures of that)  After the dress arrived and fit perfectly, I found the necklace I’ll be wearing at a cute resale shop in Grand Rapids for $6!

After that, I set my sights on Dear Golden for my shoes. Shoes are always tough for me to buy for a few reasons:

1. I don’t like to spend a lot of money on shoes

2. I need COMFORTABLE shoes

3. I would like them to be well made

4. I don’t like to support mass made shoes

5. I’d like them to be somewhat stylish

(Do you see how #s 2-5 contradict with #1??? yeah, so now you know why it’s tough)

Annnyways, all of this to say why I am very ,very happy with my new (to me) Italian leather janes

mmmmm…. shoes

YAY! I’ll post pictures of the complete outfit when they all come together in a perfect harmony.

Dear Golden – Vintage Shop

Posted by on Oct 15, 2012 in accessories, clothing | 0 comments

Do you enjoy quality clothing? Do you like spectacular vintage fashion? If you answered yes to either of those questions,  make your way as fast as possible to Dear Golden – an online vintage shop with a store front in downtown Ypsilanti.

However, if you get slightly aroused/salavate at the sight of lovely clothing, proceed with caution. I tell you no lies – this is the cream of the crop as far as curated vintage shops go. You get a little weak in the knees entering the store because you feel like you’ve traveled back into the dressing rooms of the classiest ladies from every decade. Wall to wall vintage wedding dresses, cocktail dresses, shoes, handbags, jewelry, coats and hats .

I was searching for a pair of shoes to go with a custom dress made by  THREADBEAT  (who is a first class seamstress and a magician at making very specific clothing dreams come true in no time at all). I brought a photo of the dress to Dear Golden’s owner – the quick witted and brilliant Lauren Naimola .

After briefly looking at the entire wall of gorgeous shoes, within moments I was handed the most perfect pair of black kitten heels to go with my dress (they were just my size!!)

Viola!

*sigh* (they’re so comfortable, barely worn and they were a bargin!) I want to buy them all over again.

Okay, you’ve been sent on a mission – experience Dear Golden for yourselves. <3

Jamie Bourgeois – Textile Artist

Posted by on Jul 3, 2012 in accessories, art, clothing, Crafts | 0 comments

My friend Jamie Bourgeois is a huge inspiration to me. She is a very thoughtful textile artist with a message on how humans interact with their environment.

(psst! I want this dress so badly!.. she needs to make many more of these..)

jamie bourgeois, colony, fungi dress

Having graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design, she recently completed a series named Homogeneous :

“A series of screen printed silk scarves which explore the classification of non-human organisms in order to see more clearly into how we can perceive ourselves as humans, as entities with the same basic needs and fundamental desires as all living beings.”

EXTINCT

jamie bourgeois, scarves, homogeneous

99% of all living species that have ever lived on this planet are now extinct.”

PARASITE

jamie bourgeois, scarves, homogeneous

“Parasites live on or in a host organism at the expense of the host, benefiting only itself.”

INVASIVE

jamie bourgeois, scarves, homogeneous

“Invasive species invade foreign ecosystems, deplete resources, and crowd out other species.”

All I can say is : incredibly inspiring, thought provoking with detail to make your head spin!  I can’t wait to see what Jamie has in store for us in the future.

Turquoise Accents for Henna

Posted by on May 2, 2012 in accessories, art, clothing, Crafts, Henna | 0 comments

The brown/red/orange color of henna goes so well with the vibrant color of turquoise. I just love it. Here is some great turquoise jewelry and accessories that accent henna perfectly.

This vintage 1950’s art deco necklace from Kettle of Fish has pretty turquoise-colored floral accents.

When you get your ankle & foot henna-ed, you can accent it with a pretty bracelet like this brass and turquoise anklet from Xtra Virgin.

Ah! Gorgeous turquoise cuff! from Startup Sterling!  I love the bezel and how it has a henna quality, but in metal . Picture a full arm covering in lovely red henna and with this turquoise wrist cuff.. *sigh* so nice!

If you’re going to get all henna-ed up, you’re going to need a beautiful mirror to gaze upon the loveliness right? Well that’s where this gorgeous, vintage turquoise hand mirror from EightySix56 comes in “handy” .. heh

The combination of turquoise pieces and freshwater pearls here with the statement necklace by AudreyJewelry is chunky yet feminine – in a perfect balance.

I know I always have a purpose for a cute clutch.. and this one would be no exception! This unique, Russian floral print clutch made by JordaniSarreal is a cozy home for any items that can be easily misplaced.

Delicate, paisley, turquoise bead, silver… what’s not to adore here? Nothing?… exactly. This handcrafted necklace by Noria Elements would be a great gift for someone special in your life (even yourself) .

A turquoise shirt with a henna print? The loveliness of this speaks for itself. NaturalHennaArt’s  line of henna print shirts are just fantastic!

And to round out the turquoise post, let’s remember that henna-ed feet are happy feet – anyone will tell ya that! But what makes them even happier is having a CUTE turquoise and copper toe ring like this one from The Whimsy Wire . Oh.. I can barely get over the cuteness..

Henna Art – Off the Body

Posted by on Apr 28, 2012 in accessories, art, clothing, Crafts, Henna | 0 comments

Here is a beautiful array of henna art in many forms off the body! Showcasing artists who have taken the allure of henna designs and used them on other mediums.

A great example of henna design off the body, but still lovely traditional design, is Carry The News’  mehndi-inspired wedding invite. And what’s better? You don’t have to wait for these to be shipped to you because they are PRINTABLE! When you send your info, Carry The News emails a file for you to print and email to your guests. How awesome (and green-friendly!)

I really like this henna-inspired peacock by  Sometimes I Swirl  because of the bold colors and the fluidity of the motion.

But the embroidery by Sometimes I Swirl is equally as impressive.. I don’t know which one I like more.. !

Lime and Purple! Such a hot combination. <3 Then add a high heel and henna design into the mix and you have one radical shoe! These yummy heels from Kezbirdie make me drool a little on the keyboard….

Like elephants? Like vividly colorful elephant paintings? Me too! That’s why this next painting by Masala Memories is a favorite.

From fellow Michigan Henna Artist Be*Henna*ed  we get this great “Iceberg Blue Canvas Henna Mandala” – Perfect title for such a saturated, deep blue and stark white design.

Oh! Did someone say hand-painted pendant glass necklace with a henna design?!? Because that’s right up my alley. Awesome design by Mehndi Glass with a antiqued copper frame.. yes!

And last, but certainly not least, we have an adorable painted  tea cup and saucer by Heather with my favorite : flowers and paisleys . I love her description here, too : “Spot of tea? Oh, live a little – impress your grandmother with this hand painted porcelaine tea cup and serve in style.”
